A Wearable Landscape, a collaboration with Anne Pajunen

The Idea.

This is a wearable landscape.

The shape resembles a circus pavilion.

Like the big top it is tied down.I

ts shape could be seen as a nod to the past… However, it is also an elegant way to create a garment to be worn by up to 3 people.

It is a Metaphor.

We are part of a landscape.

We are connected. We remember, react, associate, strive and despair as individuals, families and societies.

What can we hear as our actions affect those around us?

And how do we react?

Surface tension or fundamental differences?

You hear what you want to hear.

This is an experience.

We are connected to the landscape and each other. This isn't a question, it is a fact.

The multifunctional garment demonstrates physically how those occupying the wearable landscape can cooperate, merge or create a discord.

These themes occur in a musical landscape too.

Outside influences also affect the players in their landscapeThey can be pulled violently or subtly in any direction.

This is a  reminder that this landscape is connected to an even larger  landscape and that one to an even bigger environment….. Seen from above, our wearable landscape is a tiny patch on a massive tapestry.

Songs from a Moving Landscape was performed  4th November 2023

It was a part of the Calmsleep Chambers Salong #6

The piece was performed by Anne Pajunen and Toby Kassel.

Here is a link for a video of the first performance : https://vimeo.com/885190407

The Making of The Wearable Landscape.

The collaboration with the Swedish composer and Artist Anne Pajunen cumilated in a music and dance  performance  featuring  a Wearable Landscape… 3 elongated Flirtskirts set into a 6m x 6 m square. The piece can be worn by up to 3 people.

There are large eyelets in the corners and halfway along each side.

100m of red rope can be used to manipulate the "Frock" like a giant puppet.

There are fine grey stripes forming a tiny grid all over the surface… coincidence?

Actually, yes. This fabric has been created for those working with fire, like welders.

The fine grey stripe ensures the cloth is fire retardant. If the cloth should start to burn the fibres will emit a gas to starve a flame from oxygen and stop it.

I am not planning to make the pattern available, However it has been wonderful to brainstorm about how fabric and music can come together and to create a fabulous piece much greater than the sum of the parts.

It was a pleasure to be involved in this piece and I would like to thank all involved for making it possible.
